The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees meet in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday at 6:00 PM ET on ESPN. Boston Red Sox Preview

The Red Sox got timely hits when it mattered most in Game 1. They finished with eight hits overall and went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Masataka Yoshida delivered the biggest swing, a pinch-hit single that drove in two runs in the seventh inning. Alex Bregman added an RBI double in the ninth, and Trevor Story scored a run, picked up two hits, and stole a base. Ceddanne Rafaela also had two hits and scored. Boston left 10 men on base and struck out eight times.

On the mound, Garrett Crochet was excellent, throwing 7.2 innings with 11 strikeouts and no walks, giving up just a solo home run to Anthony Volpe. Aroldis Chapman came in for the save, recording the final four outs with two strikeouts, to escape a bases-loaded jam. Boston’s bullpen is well rested heading into Game 2, with only Chapman seeing a full inning of relief.

New York Yankees Preview

The Yankees struck first with a solo home run from Anthony Volpe in the second inning, but that was all the scoring they managed. Volpe finished with two hits, while Aaron Judge and Paul Goldschmidt also collected two hits each. The rest of the lineup was quiet, and New York went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and struck out 13 times.

Max Fried gave the Yankees a strong start with 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits with six strikeouts. The bullpen faltered, though — Luke Weaver gave up two runs without recording an out, and David Bednar surrendered an RBI double in the ninth. For Game 2, New York will turn to Carlos Rodón in a must-win spot, with most of the bullpen available if needed.

Boston showed it can cash in on key chances, while New York put runners on but failed to bring them home.
