Brooklyn Needs to Start Guarding Somebody
The Nets are 0-3 after losing 110-103 to Charlotte, 125-121 at Cleveland and 136-109 to Indiana. That’s 371 points allowed in three games, or 123.7 per contest. The defensive problem isn’t subtle.
Brooklyn can score in stretches. Putting 121 on Cleveland showed the offense can find open looks, and even Sunday’s loss included 109 points. But trading baskets doesn’t work when the other team is getting cleaner shots every possession.

The Nets have to slow Boston’s half-court execution and stop giving up easy transition opportunities. They also need to rebound defensively. Otherwise, the Celtics will spend the night getting second chances and forcing Brooklyn to chase.
Boston Has the Better Defensive Foundation
Boston entered Monday at 1-1, including a 107-103 win over New York on Friday. The Celtics didn’t need an offensive explosion to beat the Knicks. They got enough stops when the game tightened, which is exactly what Brooklyn hasn’t been doing.
The question is whether Monday’s game against Chicago leaves Boston tired or short-handed. A back-to-back can affect perimeter shooting and defensive energy. That’s why I wouldn’t chase a spread into double digits without checking availability.
Even so, the matchup favors Boston. The Celtics have more reliable defensive structure, and Brooklyn has already allowed 125 or more twice. Boston should be able to generate quality looks without having to play at a frantic pace.

Boston Celtics -8.5 or Better — Target
I’ll lay up to 8.5 with Boston. Brooklyn’s defense has been awful, and the Celtics should have opportunities to build a lead through better shot selection and defensive rebounding. The biggest risk is Boston’s Monday workload, especially if regular rotation players sit. Assuming a reasonably healthy lineup, this looks like a double-digit Boston victory.
Under 224.5 or Higher — Target
I’m leaning under at 224.5 or higher. Brooklyn’s defensive numbers make that uncomfortable, but Boston has already shown it can win a controlled game, and a second game in two nights may encourage a slower tempo. If the Celtics get ahead, they don’t need to turn this into a track meet. The risk is Brooklyn’s defense allowing another 125-plus. My projection is roughly 115-105 Boston.
