Southern Virginia Knights Preview

Southern Virginia is coming off the best season in program history and returns a veteran lineup led by seniors Jude Ballstaedt, Tillman Johnson, and Luc DeVore. The Knights led the USA South in opponent field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage last season while playing a disruptive defensive style that generated extra possessions. Junior guard Ty Peterson and forward Gerard Bolden Jr. headline a group of upperclassmen expected to carry the scoring load.

The frontcourt adds needed size with 6-10 freshman Austin Mitchell and 7-footer Bridger Anderson, who give the Knights an interior presence rarely seen at the Division III level. This game provides a test against a high-major, talented team. Head coach Trace Bevell has emphasized discipline and shot selection during practices leading up to the game, knowing that controlling tempo and minimizing turnovers will be vital to staying competitive.

Richmond Spiders Preview

Richmond opens its 21st campaign under Mooney, looking to rebound from a difficult 2024–25. Junior guard Mikkel Tyne returns as the only Spider to start every game last season, while senior Jonathan Beagle looks for a larger role inside. Richmond’s offense again emphasizes spacing and passing, and the new additions give the Spiders more reliable perimeter threats.
