Houston Christian is 1-0 overall and 1-0 in Southland play after opening 2026 with a 34-28 road win over Southeastern Louisiana. Rice begins its season after finishing 5-8 overall in 2025, closing with three straight losses, including a 41-10 defeat to Texas State in the Armed Forces Bowl. Houston Christian opened with 361 total yards against a Southeastern Louisiana team ranked No. 19 in the FCS. Quarterback Cutter Stewart accounted for 268 yards, completing 10 of 18 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while rushing 15 times for 95 yards. Jamaal Hall II caught a 66-yard touchdown, and the Huskies scored 31 points across the second and third quarters.

The Huskies allowed 398 yards and had to withstand a late comeback after taking a 31-14 lead. Southeastern Louisiana scored twice in the fourth quarter to cut the margin to six before Houston Christian ran out the clock. Javon Bejarano recorded 10 tackles, while Jayven Anderson had one sack. Houston Christian now faces an FBS offense built around a run-heavy system.

Rice Owls Preview

Rice's offense depends heavily on its ground game under Scott Abell. The Owls went 5-2 when rushing for more than 190 yards last season but 0-6 when finishing at or below that mark. Quinton Jackson returns after rushing for 889 yards and six touchdowns while averaging close to five yards per carry. Jacurri Brown takes over at quarterback, with D'Andre Hardemann and Tyonn Byars adding depth in the backfield.

The Owls need major defensive improvement after struggling to prevent scoring opportunities in 2025.
