Idaho Vandals Preview
Idaho brings back quarterback Joshua Wood after he passed for 1,898 yards with 14 touchdowns and five interceptions last season. The Vandals return 75% of their offensive production after ranking 39th in the FCS in yards per play, 30th in rushing and 27th in offensive EPA. Idaho also showed an ability to compete against FBS opponents, losing just 13-10 to Washington State and 31-28 to San Jose State.
The bigger concern comes defensively, where Idaho returns only 30% of its production after forcing just 11 takeaways last season. New defensive lineman Da'Vaughn Robinson could help the pass rush after recording seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss at Moorpark College. Idaho went only 1-5 on the road last season, making this a difficult early test against a powerful Utah offense.
Utah Utes Preview
Utah's offense is built around quarterback Devon Dampier, who threw for nearly 2,500 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 835 rushing yards last season. Wayshawn Parker led the Big 12 with 981 rushing yards while averaging 6.6 yards per carry, and backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin added 513 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Utah also added Utah State receiver Braden Pegan, who caught 60 passes for 926 yards and five scores.

The Utes allowed 14 points or fewer seven times last season but enter 2026 replacing several important defenders. Leading tackler Johnathan Hall returns after making 67 stops with six tackles for loss, while Ethan Day arrives after producing 53 tackles, 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss at North Texas. Utah recorded 34 sacks last season, although replacing 11.5-sack producer John Henry-Daley creates an important early-season question.
Idaho Vandals vs Utah Utes Prediction
Idaho has enough returning offensive production to make some plays, especially with Wood back at quarterback, but the defensive turnover creates a difficult matchup against one of the country's strongest rushing attacks. Utah can attack with Dampier and Parker while using the run to create favorable passing opportunities.
The 33.5-point spread requires Utah to keep scoring well into the second half, but the Utes closed last season by scoring at least 31 points in each of their final five games. Idaho's rebuilt defense will struggle to contain Utah's ground game for four quarters, while the Utes have enough defensive talent to prevent the Vandals from consistently finishing drives. Utah will pull away behind its rushing attack and cover the large home spread. Final Score Prediction: Utah Utes win and cover ATS, 45-7.
