Maine is 1-0 overall and 1-0 in CAA play after opening the season with a 21-18 road victory over Towson. Appalachian State opens its season after finishing 5-8 overall in 2025. The Mountaineers lost four of their final five games, including a 29-10 defeat to Georgia Southern in their season finale. Maine Black Bears Preview

Maine scored all 21 of its points in the second quarter against Towson before holding on for the three-point win. Quarterback Eddie Buehler completed 17 of 27 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Rashawn Marshall provided the biggest threat on the ground, rushing 13 times for 81 yards and a touchdown. The Black Bears finished with 329 total yards, converted 5 of 14 third downs and did not commit a turnover.

The Black Bears allowed 379 yards but made important plays when needed. Towson converted only 4 of 12 third downs and committed two turnovers, while Maine did not allow a point in the final 12 minutes. Chris Bacon recorded two sacks, and Jeremiah McGill led the defense with 10 tackles. Maine now faces an FBS offense with several new pieces, giving the Black Bears a chance to test that group before it develops continuity.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Preview

Appalachian State enters its second season under Dowell Loggains with major changes on offense. The Mountaineers threw for more than 300 yards five times last season but ranked 123rd nationally on third downs and threw 15 interceptions. Transfers Malachi Singleton and Henry Hasselbeck are among the quarterback options, while J'Marion Burnette joins Jaquari Lewis in the backfield. Semaj Fleming and Dazmin James are among several transfers added at receiver.

Linebacker Colton Phares is the proven centerpiece after recording 101 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and three interceptions. Appalachian State has the deeper roster and more offensive options, particularly in the running game, but Maine demonstrated enough defensively to keep this from becoming a runaway early. The Mountaineers will control more of the second half and win at home, but Maine will stay close enough to cover the large spread.
