The Merrimack Warriors open the 2026 season against the Delaware Blue Hens on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. ET at Delaware Stadium in Newark. Merrimack finished 2025 at 4-8 overall as an FCS independent, ending the season with a 27-26 victory over Fordham. Delaware went 7-6 overall and 4-4 in Conference USA during its first FBS season, closing with consecutive wins over UTEP and Louisiana. Merrimack Warriors Preview

Merrimack averaged 20.5 points and 343.9 yards per game last season, including 4.6 yards per rushing attempt. Sophomore transfer AJ Hairston Jr. takes over at quarterback, with DeMarcus McElroy and Galamama Mulbah leading the backfield. The receiving group includes Austin Palmer, Kenyon Massey and Stephon Patrick. Merrimack scored at least 20 points in four of its final five games, but the Warriors lost four of those contests.

The Warriors allowed 24.4 points per game in 2025 while limiting opponents to 202.8 passing yards per contest. Defensive tackle Bryce Warrick and 330-pound nose tackle Bryce Ricks anchor the interior, while Dwayne Green Jr. and Logan Graham provide pressure from the edge. Delaware led Conference USA with 441.6 yards per game last season and returns quarterback Nick Minicucci after he threw for 3,683 yards and 23 touchdowns while adding 10 rushing scores. Running backs Jo Silver and Viron Ellison combined for more than 1,100 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Sean Wilson also returns after leading Delaware with 68 receptions for 877 yards and three touchdowns. That experienced core gives the Blue Hens several proven ways to attack Merrimack.

Delaware's defense needs improvement after allowing 4.6 yards per rush and surrendering at least 200 rushing yards four times last season. Linebacker Gavin Moul is the centerpiece after recording 111 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss.
