Oregon State has won five straight, and the Beavers have been scoring like somebody forgot to tell them football games are supposed to be competitive. They put 66 on San Diego State, 56 on Colorado State, and 48 on Washington State. Now they’re heading to Fresno, where the Bulldogs have lost two straight but have been much more competitive than those scores suggest. Fresno State nearly beat Boise State, losing 38-31, and then fell by three at San Diego State. This isn’t going to be as easy as Oregon State’s recent games. Defensively, Oregon State has been inconsistent. The Beavers held UTEP to seven and San Diego State to 14, but Washington State scored 30 and Colorado State put up 26. Fresno State has enough offensive ability to exploit those weaknesses, especially at home. Oregon State needs to prevent explosive passing plays and make the Bulldogs sustain drives. Fresno State is 4-3 overall and 1-2 in Pac-12 play after losing 26-23 at San Diego State on October 17. The Bulldogs have had a bye week to prepare, and that’s important against an Oregon State team that’s been playing excellent football. Fresno State also lost 38-31 to Boise State, so the Bulldogs have dropped two straight by a combined ten points. That’s frustrating, but it also shows they’ve been competitive against quality conference opponents. Fresno State is 2-1 at home, and the Bulldogs should be comfortable playing under the lights.

The Bulldogs have scored 49 against Sacramento State, 38 against Rice, and 31 against Boise State. That’s enough offensive ability to make Oregon State work. Fresno State has been productive through the air, but the running game needs to be more consistent. Oregon State has been vulnerable defensively against stronger passing offenses, and Fresno State should find opportunities if it protects the quarterback. The Bulldogs need to avoid turnovers and finish drives. They can’t afford to settle for field goals against an offense averaging more than 50 points during its winning streak.

Defensively, Fresno State has been much better than several of Oregon State’s recent opponents. The Bulldogs held Washington State to six, San Jose State to ten, and Sacramento State to three. But Boise State scored 38, and Oregon State has been even more explosive lately. Fresno State needs to prevent big plays and force the Beavers to sustain long drives. The Bulldogs also need to create turnovers, because Oregon State has been difficult to stop when it gets into a rhythm. If Fresno State can keep the Beavers in the low 30s, this could be a very competitive game.

I’ll take Fresno State getting 7.5 points. Oregon State is the better team, and the Beavers deserve to be favored. But Fresno State has been competitive against Boise State and San Diego State, losing those games by seven and three points. The Bulldogs also have the home field and an extra week to prepare. Oregon State has been scoring at an incredible pace, and that’s the obvious concern. If the Beavers get rolling early, Fresno State could be in trouble. But I think the Bulldogs have enough offense to keep this within one possession. Oregon State may win, but I’ll take the points.

Over 56.5

I’m taking Over 56.5. Oregon State has scored 48 or more in four of its last five games, and Fresno State has enough offensive ability to contribute. The Bulldogs scored 31 against Boise State, and Oregon State just allowed 30 to Washington State. That suggests both teams should find opportunities. The danger is Fresno State’s defense slowing Oregon State down more than its recent opponents have, especially after the bye week. But the Beavers have been too productive offensively for me to expect a low-scoring game. Something around 34-30 Oregon State makes sense.
