SMU vs Syracuse Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 31 2026
SMU just put 59 points on California, and now the Mustangs are heading to Syracuse as a double-digit favorite. That sounds reasonable until you remember that SMU has played most of its best football at home. The Mustangs are 5-0 in Dallas but only 1-1 on the road. Syracuse hasn’t been particularly impressive, but the Orange get this game indoors, where weather won’t be a problem and the crowd can make things uncomfortable. I like SMU, but laying ten points on the road isn’t exactly free money. The Mustangs visit the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York, on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on ESPN2. SMU is favored by approximately 9.5 to 10.5 points, with the total around 55.5 to 56.5. The stadium is enclosed, so outside temperatures, wind, and rain should not influence the game. This one comes down to execution, not the weather.
SMU Has Been Getting Better Every Week
SMU is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in ACC play. The Mustangs have won four straight since losing 41-31 at Louisville, and Saturday’s 59-20 victory over California was their most impressive offensive performance of the season. They also beat Virginia 23-13 and Boston College 25-16 during that stretch. That’s a pretty good balance of explosive offense and solid defense. The Mustangs have been much more consistent than Syracuse, and that’s why they’re favored despite playing on the road.
SMU has shown it can score in different ways. The Mustangs put 56 on UC Davis, 34 on Missouri State, and 59 on California. But they’ve also been able to win lower-scoring games, which is important when traveling. Syracuse will try to slow things down and make SMU sustain drives. The Mustangs need to avoid turnovers and keep their passing game efficient. They’ve been productive enough through the air to attack a Syracuse defense that has struggled against stronger offenses, and they should be able to move the football if they protect the quarterback.

The defense has been the biggest improvement. SMU held Virginia to 13 and Boston College to 16, and those performances helped the Mustangs build their winning streak. California scored 20 Saturday, but SMU’s offense made that game comfortable early. The Mustangs need to keep Syracuse from establishing its running game and force the Orange into obvious passing situations. If they do that, they should have the advantage. The concern is that SMU hasn’t played particularly well away from home against stronger opposition. Louisville scored 41 against the Mustangs, and Syracuse will try to find some of those same weaknesses.
Syracuse Needs to Make This a Physical Game
Syracuse has been inconsistent throughout the season, and the Orange haven’t shown the same offensive production as SMU. They did score 26 against Louisville in a 34-26 loss, which suggests they can compete when the offense gets moving. But the Orange have also struggled to finish drives and have had difficulty defending stronger passing attacks. That’s a bad combination against a Mustangs team coming off a 59-point performance.
The biggest challenge for Syracuse is controlling possession. SMU has enough offensive ability to score quickly, and the Orange can’t afford to give the Mustangs extra opportunities. Syracuse needs to establish the run, stay ahead of the chains, and make SMU defend long drives. If the Orange are constantly facing third-and-long situations, the Mustangs’ defense should be able to get off the field. Syracuse also needs to protect the football. Turnovers against an offense like SMU can turn a close game into a blowout in a matter of minutes.
Defensively, Syracuse has to prevent explosive passing plays. The Mustangs just scored 59 against California, and that kind of offensive production is difficult to overcome. The Orange need to get pressure on the quarterback and force SMU to settle for field goals. Playing indoors removes the possibility of weather slowing the Mustangs down, so Syracuse has to create its own advantages. The home crowd could help, especially if the Orange get off to a good start. But if SMU scores on its first couple of possessions, this could become a difficult afternoon.
SMU vs Syracuse Picks and Predictions
SMU -9.5
I’ll lay 9.5 with SMU. The Mustangs have been the better team, they’ve won four straight, and their offense is coming off a 59-point performance. Syracuse can be competitive at home, and the Orange should have opportunities against an SMU defense that gave up 41 at Louisville. That’s the concern. But SMU has been much more consistent offensively, and I expect the Mustangs to create enough explosive plays to pull away. Syracuse will have to play almost mistake-free football to stay within one possession. I don’t see that happening. Give me SMU by two touchdowns.
Under 56.5
I’m going Under 56.5. SMU just scored 59, so I understand why bettors might be tempted to take the over. But the Mustangs have also won games 23-13 and 25-16, and their defense has been much better lately. Syracuse should try to control the clock and prevent SMU from getting too many possessions. The Orange have struggled offensively against stronger teams, and I don’t expect them to contribute 30 points here. The risk is SMU scoring 40 on its own, which is certainly possible after Saturday. But I think the Mustangs control the game without turning it into another shootout. Something around 34-17 makes sense.
Final Picks: SMU -9.5 and Under 56.5
