By: Cameron Ross Updated 09/08/2025, 09:02 AM ET

Giants Preview

The New York Giants open the 2025 season in week one with a game in Maryland against the Washington Commanders. New York underwent a full rebuild in the offseason as it looks to improve on an abysmal 3-win campaign a year ago, which saw them lose 11 of the final 12 games of the season following a 7-point road loss to Philadelphia in the season finale. Defensively, New York was terrible last season, ranking in the bottom portion of the league, allowing an average of 24.4 points per game overall. Offensively, New York was a bottom-feeder as well, averaging just 16.2 points per game through 17 games played. Stay in the loop with our NFL Picks.

Russell Wilson is the new starting quarterback for the Giants this season after signing with the team this summer. Wilson had a mediocre showing in his lone year with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, completing 214 passes for 2482 yards and 16 scores. Malik Nabers is listed as questionable for this game but will be a primary target for New York after 1204 yards and seven scores on 109 receptions a year ago.

Commanders Preview

The Washington Commanders open this season at home, looking to repeat their success from last year. Washington had a solid season a year ago, finishing the regular campaign with 12 wins and five losses overall, as they concluded the season on a five-game winning streak. The Commanders saw their season end in the conference final with a 32-point loss to the Philadelphia Eagles after they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Detroit Lions in the playoffs.

Jayden Daniels will be back under center again this season for Washington, leading the team with 3568 yards and 25 scores on 331 completions to go along with a team-leading 891 yards and six scores on 148 carries. Terry McLaurin was the top receiver for Washington a year ago and returned after pulling in 82 catches for 1096 yards and 13 scores in 2024.

Commanders vs Giants Pick

The Washington Commanders are the better team in this matchup, which will be evident from the opening minutes in Week 1. Look for Washington to jump on a lackluster New York team in the middle of a rebuild. Take Washington to do the work this week as they start the season undefeated with a win and cover at home. Final Score Prediction, Washington Commanders win and cover 27-13.
