Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 28 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/28/2026, 12:45 AM ET

Four wins in a row for Calgary. I’ll give the Flames some credit, because a week ago they looked like they might spend the whole season digging themselves out of a hole. But now they’re going to Edmonton, and I don’t think the Oilers are particularly worried about that winning streak. Edmonton is scoring better than four goals a game. Calgary has scored 28 goals in eleven games. That’s quite a difference, especially when the Flames have to deal with Edmonton’s offense on the road.

The Battle of Alberta returns to Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday, October 28, with puck drop at 8:30 PM ET. This is the first meeting of the season. I like Edmonton on the moneyline, although I’d want a reasonable price, and Over 6.5 goals if that number is available. Get into the action with our free NHL picks.

Calgary Flames Have Finally Found Some Wins

Calgary is 5-6-0 after winning four straight. The Flames are still below .500, but they’ve at least stopped losing every close game. That matters for a young team. Getting a few wins together can change how everybody approaches the next one. Trouble is, Calgary has been much better lately than it was at the start of the season, and Edmonton is still a step up in competition. The Flames have also struggled against Pacific Division opponents, going 1-5 in those games.

Calgary has scored 28 goals and allowed 41 through eleven games. That’s about 2.5 goals scored and 3.7 allowed per night. The Flames are getting close to 29 shots a game, so they haven’t completely stopped creating chances. Finishing them has been the problem. Edmonton doesn’t have a shutdown defense, and that gives Calgary an opportunity. But if the Flames need four goals just to stay competitive, I don’t like their chances. They haven’t been that kind of offensive team.

The injury list isn’t helping. Jonathan Huberdeau is out with a hip problem, Samuel Honzek is unavailable with a lower-body injury, and Mikael Backlund has been dealing with an upper-body issue. Backlund’s status matters because Calgary needs experienced centers who can handle difficult matchups. Without Huberdeau, the Flames are also missing a player who can create offense when things get stuck. Calgary will need a big game from its goaltender, whether that’s Dustin Wolf or Devin Cooley, and I wouldn’t bet this game without checking the starter.

Edmonton Oilers Can Score Their Way Through Trouble

Edmonton is 8-2-2, including a 5-0-1 record against Pacific Division opponents. That’s a good start, and the Oilers have been particularly tough when they get their offense going. They’re 8-0-1 when scoring at least three goals. That’s the number I’d remember before this game. Calgary has been allowing nearly four goals a night, and Edmonton doesn’t usually need much help finding scoring chances.

The Oilers are averaging about 4.4 goals per game. That’s a lot of offense, even for a team that’s used to scoring. They’re also allowing around 3.4, so the defense isn’t exactly making every night comfortable. That’s why I like the over more than I would against a better defensive club. Edmonton can win 5-3 just as easily as 3-1. The Oilers don’t need to shut Calgary down if they keep getting the puck into dangerous areas themselves.

Leon Draisaitl is still one of the players Calgary has to worry about every time he’s on the ice. Zach Hyman gives Edmonton another scoring threat around the net, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can create chances on the power play. The Oilers are dealing with injuries, though. Mattias Ekholm is out with a concussion, while Jason Dickinson, Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark are also unavailable. Goaltender Devon Levi is sidelined, and Frederik Andersen remains out. That’s a lot of missing depth. Edmonton has enough offense to cover for some of it, but the defensive injuries make me less comfortable laying a big puck-line number.

Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers Picks and Predictions

Edmonton Oilers Moneyline — Target -180 or Better

I’m taking Edmonton to win, preferably at -180 or better. Calgary has won four straight, but the Flames have still been outscored by 13 goals this season. That’s not the kind of team I want to back against an Edmonton offense scoring more than four a night. The Oilers have been especially good against Pacific Division opponents, and I like their chances of making Calgary chase the game. Edmonton’s defensive injuries are the concern. If Calgary gets a couple of early goals, this could become uncomfortable. But I trust Edmonton’s offense more than Calgary’s ability to keep up.

Over 6.5 Goals — Target Total

Give me Over 6.5 if that’s the number. Calgary has allowed 41 goals in eleven games, and Edmonton has been scoring about 4.4 per night. That’s a pretty inviting matchup for the Oilers. But Edmonton also gives up enough chances that Calgary could contribute two or three goals. The one thing I’d watch is the starting goaltenders. A strong night from Wolf could keep this lower than expected, and rivalry games sometimes get tighter than the season averages suggest. Still, I can see Edmonton winning 5-3. That gets the Oilers home and sends the total over.

Final Picks: Edmonton Oilers Moneyline -180 or Better (target price) and Over 6.5 Goals (target total)
